Italy bridge: Genoa motorway collapse kills at least 22

A motorway bridge has collapsed near the northwest Italian city of Genoa, sending vehicles plummeting up to 90m (295ft) to the ground and killing at least 22 people, officials say.
Video footage appears to show one of the towers holding up the suspension bridge collapsing in stormy weather. Vehicles fell along with bridge debris on to rail tracks.
How the fuck can something like this happen in modern times?

I've driven around Genoa a couple of times... it doesn't surprise me that this has happened, I don't think they spent much on that road system!

Italians are very proud people. This will shock them very badly. If its austerity that has in any way caused this it will cause some very bad reactions.
